The First Communion catechesis and rites have always been organized by the Catechetical Ministry, co-headed by Alma Yeh and Sheryl Coronel. This year, they were assisted by Mina Mejia of the Mustard Seed Ministry. Last year, there were only eight First Communicants so the twenty for 2017 was a major jump in numbers.

The solemnity of the rite and the prayerful disposition of the First Communicants, who were garbed in pristine Sunday clothes and veils for the girls, left many teary-eyed. The First Communicants actively participated in the liturgy as readers of the Mass readings and Prayers of the Faithful, choir leaders, and gift bearers during the Offertory. Fr. Bong Tupino celebrated the First Communion Mass, witnessed by the children’s parents and godparents.

The various catechism topics included ‘Salvation History’ – from the fall of Man to the Resurrection of Jesus; Pentecost, the Holy Spirit and the Birth and Mission of the Church; the Apostles, their Successors, the Bishops, and the role of the Pope; Grace and Sacraments; the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation as preparation for receiving Jesus.

In the last two sessions, Alma and Sheryl practiced the order of the mass and the responses with the children.
