The Catechetical Ministry co-headed by Alma Yeh and Sheryl Coronel mounted the annual Flores de Mayo catechism classes for Libis youth, held during the children’s summer break.

The classes had been running daily, during the weekdays, for the entire month of May, from 1 to 4 pm starting May 2. The first hour, 1 to 2 pm, had been devoted to formal catechetical lessons. Then the 2 to 4 pm period was devoted to activities, praying the rosary, and floral offerings.

Last year, the classes drew 90 participants. This year, the Libis village coordinators and Libis Youth organizers outdid themselves, gathering 101 children, ages 7 to 12. Given the size, Alma and Sheryl opted to divide the children into two different classes, with the younger Group A, composed of seven to nine years old, totaling 51, and Group B, consisting of those in the 10 to 12 year age range, totaling 50.

Lessons for this year were deliberately chosen to commemorate the 100th year of the Fatima apparition, with the objective of getting the children reacquainted with the Holy Rosary and its central role in the Fatima message. The following topics made up the month’s discussions:

1. Mother Mary and the Rosary
2. Basic Prayers of the Rosary: Apostles’ Creed, Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary, Glory Be, and Hail Holy Queen
3.The Rosary and the Year of the Parish
4.The Mysteries of the Rosary : Joyful , Luminous, Sorrowful, and Glorious

The biggest problem last year was getting enough catechism volunteers. But for this year, many PPC members, and LeCom and EMHC ministers heeded the call to help. Sheryl Coronel and Alma Yeh thank the following for sharing their time and talent in volunteering to teach the children together with them – Leila Banico; Christine Bernardo; Eileen De Leon; Althea Geronilla; Elsbeth Llama; Mina Mejia; Nino Mendoza; Wins Mirasol; Beth Monedero; Tessie Moran; Fely Ong; Christianne Pasquin; Tiny Perfecto; Many Salem ; Margie San Jua n; Joy Schellenberg; and Paul Uy.

From the Libis side, we had several volunteers, including of course our BEC coordinators Ching Botero, Jo Piyaw, and Azon de Leon. From the Libis Youth Ministry, our volunteers included Youth president Paul John Garcia and members Hans Delmar, Christian Acebo, Farida Tolentino, Christine Capadocia, Manuel Borja, Eunice Alfonso, Angelo Deuna, Daniel Figuerres, Keith Odeia Botero, and Alby Butol.

The catechism classes will end on May 29, Monday, with a Eucharistic celebration at 2 pm at the Divine Mercy Chapel, officiated by no less than CTK parish priest Fr. Bong Tupino, followed by the graduation rites at 3:30 pm at St. Matthew-St. Mark Rooms of the Formation Center. As with last year, we expect the hall to be packed with the hundred children and their parents, mostly mothers, plus some of their siblings.
