Flores de Mayo Cathechism Classes for Libis Kids 7-12 Years Old
The Catechetical Ministry co-headed by Alma Yeh and Sheryl Coronel mounted the annual Flores de Mayo catechism classes for Libis and Bagumbayan youth, held during the children’s summer break.
The theme for the 2018 summer catechetical classes was Biblical characters, with special emphasis on the life and times of Jesus Christ. The classes ran daily, during the weekdays, for the entire month of May, from 2 to 4 pm starting May 2. The first hour, 2 to 3 pm, had been devoted to formal Bible lessons. Then the 3 to 4 pm period was devoted to activities, praying the rosary, and floral offerings. For 2018, an innovation introduced was the consistent use of You Tube videos that had been pre-identified as lesson aids.
Last year, the classes drew 101 participants. This year, the Libis village coordinators and Libis Youth organizers outdid themselves, gathering 108 children, ages 7 to 12. As in 2017, given the size, Alma and Sheryl opted to divide the children into two different classes, with the younger Group A, composed of seven to nine years old, totaling 53, and Group B, consisting of those in the 10 to 12 year age range, totaling 55. The medium of instruction being a mix of Tagalog and Taglish. There were over 60 topics covered.
As with last year, many PPC members and LeCom Ministry regulars heeded the call to help. Sheryl Coronel and Alma Yeh thank the following for sharing their time and talent in volunteering to teach the children together with them – Joy Schallenberg (two classes);
Monette Najar (two classes); Mary Viernes (two classes); Eileen de Leon (two sessions); Jessie Sincioco; Maget Fabella; Mina Mejia; Isabel Recto; Sol Coronel; Jane Aldeguer (two sessions); Christine Bernardo; Christianne Pasquin (two sessions); Edna Famorca; Leila Banico; Elsbeth Llama. Special mention should be given to Alma’s daughter Ivy Yeh who took on six of the sessions, the heaviest workload among the volunteers. Special thanks also go out to the Libis Youth leaders who kept the classes under control when the kids tended to become unruly.
The catechism classes ended last Wednesday, May 30, with a Eucharistic celebration at 2 pm at the Divine Mercy Chapel, attended by 90+ children, officiated by Fr. Serge Maniba, followed by the culminating rites at 3:30 pm at St. Matthew-St. Mark Rooms of the Formation Center. The hall was packed with the hundred children and their parents, mostly mothers, plus some of their siblings. The highlight of the closing ceremony were the stage plays put on by the different teams.
