Just as Christ Loves His Church
In the Catholic Church, marriage between two baptized persons is a sacrament. It expresses in a remarkable way the unbreakable bond of love between Christ and His Church. Marriage is a symbol or a sign which reveals the Lord Jesus, a mirror that reflects His divine life and love for His people. It confers grace as do all the sacraments which were instituted by Christ and entrusted to the Church to be administered and celebrated in faith by the community of believers. The ceremony, the rituals and prayers in the sacrament of Matrimony are thus a visible expression of God’s invisible work upon two persons who love each other as they commit to one another for life.
In the complete union between spouses, God’s love becomes uniquely present and this life-giving love flows through them to their family and the community. Therefore, sacramental marriage confers grace not only to the ones being wed but also to the family they shall build, to relatives and friends. In giving themselves permanently, faithfully and exclusively to each other, the spouses reveal the nature of God’s faithfulness and unconditional love for all His people. The sacrament of matrimony is the promise, the bond of love that sees spouses through the highs and lows of marriage, with each trial hurdled together further strengthening this bond and creating lasting joy. In the sacrament of matrimony, as the spouses cooperate with God’s action in their life, seeing Christ’s sacrifice for His Bride, the Church, and emulating such boundless love, marriage becomes a foretaste of heaven, a most satisfying union that benefits not only the spouses but all their family.
Pope Paul VI wrote: “By it [the Sacrament of Matrimony] husband and wife are strengthened and…consecrated for the faithful accomplishment of their proper duties, for the carrying out of their proper vocation even to perfection, and the Christian witness which is proper to them before the whole world” (Humanae Vitae, n. 25).
