The Diocese’s Social Communications Ministry held its first General Assembly at the Immaculate Conception Cathedral School auditorium, last October 27. Eighty-six delegates from the different parishes attended, with Bing del Rosario and Sheryl Coronel from the CTK Media Ministry attending. Drawing inspiration from the message of Pope Francis during World Communications Day 2018, the theme for the General Assembly was ‘The Search for Truth: Social Communications at the Service of Peace’.

The event started at 8:30 am with a concelebrated mass by Bishop Honesto F. Ongtioco and Fr. Herbie Santos, Director of the Diocese Social Communications Ministry.

The General Assembly had a full line-up of speakers. First to talk was Bishop Mylo Vergara, Chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Social Communications, or ECSC, who spoke on the ‘Importance of Social Communications in the Church Ministry’.

The second talk, on ‘Social Communications and Evangelization’, was by Rev. Fr. Joselito Jopson, the Executive Secretary of the Ecclesiastical Commission on Social Communications. An open forum regarding the first two talks followed right after.

They were followed by Edwin Lopez of EWTN Asia-Pacific. Though asked to talk on ‘Accurate Data in Social Media’, Mr. Lopez decided to ask the audience what topics were on their minds and then proceeded to discourse on the questions asked.

After lunch, a talk on ‘Recognizing and Eliminating Fake News and Promoting a Journalism of Peace’ was given by Fr. JBoy Gonzales SJ, Assistant Director for Formation at Ateneo de Davao.

Then came the last speaker, well-known TV personality and broadcast journalist Ms. Tina Monzon-Palma who gave her take on ‘The Relationship Between Mainstream and Church Media’.
